So now that we are home and able to upload photos (tablet would read memory card but blog website would not recognize tablet), we can let pictures tell the story. Apologies for the annoying dust spot on the small camera. We didn't pull the Nikon out until the Grand Canyon.
On the first day of the trip, we left in the dark and crossed the border with minor difficulty, having accidentally chosen the NEXUS lane. Icy roads in Michigan led to a number of cars in the ditch, thankfully not including us.
Once the sun came up and the roads dried, we sped through Indiana, Illinois and part of Missouri for nearly 1100 km all told. Along the way, we hooked up with historic Route 66, the legendary "Mother Road" running from Chicago to Los Angeles.
We camped for the night at Meramec State Park, just southwest of St. Louis, amid 300-year old burr oaks and caves used by the James Gang. We were the only campers in the park. :)
