December to Remember

We rolled into a mild December, with some nice days for walking and some final winterizing and maintenance around the property. Lots of birds passing through, and a few nocturnal visitors to the back deck as well.

We chose Disney+ as this year's holiday streaming binge, to watch a number of TV series' we like, plus a few retro movies and festive flicks along the way to break things up a little. As they say, it's not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls from Nakatomi Plaza!

Jane began to offer pieces on consignment at the Briar Patch, newly re-opened in early December after nearly a year and a half following the big explosion that shut down the entire village.

A huge storm hit southern Ontario just before the holidays, shutting down all major roads and stranding travellers amidst gusting winds, whiteouts and historic snowfall. A state of emergency was even declared in some locales, and in the Chatham area stranded people were put up in churches, stranger's houses, and the local Walmart. With all the advance warning, we were home and hunkered and well-prepared, but somehow managed to not lose power, trees or even internet amidst the raging winds.

After the big storm had passed, we did make it to London area for a brief Coxmas, despite the front end and engine compartment of the Juke being entirely packed with drifted snow. Dave made it out for the day, and events included Top Gun Maverick on the (really) big screen, World Juniors on TSN, good tunes, great company and a big feed of Chinese food.

Autumn Activities

Taking advantage of pleasant fall weather and a relative lull in the pandemic, we squeezed in some family visits with trips to the Barrie area and eastern Ontario. Between winter weather and the upcoming "tripledemic" of COVID, RSV and the flu, we also knew that these might (and did) turn out to be our Christmas visits as well.

We took the opportunity to go for a nice hike at the Sheffield Conservation Area, our most challenging effort since returning from Iceland. There were also numerous walks closer to home, beautiful and relaxing though without much elevation in terrain.

The Wheatley Winter Sale brought decent weather, on a sunny but rather windy November day. Quite a few people came out, though in the current climate of economic uncertainty, fewer people seemed to be buying.

Dave also came for a few visits to enjoy the property, home cooking and the many cats, along with a Star Wars marathon.
