While we built a new deck a few years back to house the gazebo, the old/original deck off the back door was sorely in need of some attention. Boards were rotting, especially in high traffic areas from the stairs to the door. I even crawled under there a while back and screwed some 2x4's perpendicular to the deck boards for temporary support - we don't need to get sued by a delivery guy!
It was time. John came down for a few days to tear out the old, reinforce the existing support structure underneath, and put down a new deck and stairs. Work started with me crawling back under the deck and slowly and painfully removing my support 2x4's while lying on my back in a narrow space.
Once the rotting deck boards were off, we could see what we were dealing with. The decision was made to more than double the existing (and a tad sketchy) support by adding more posts, doubling the joists, and utilizing braces between the joists and posts for added peace of mind.
Other than some light drizzle, we enjoyed some good fall weather for working outdoors - cool but generally sunny, though the windburn was definitely a thing one of the days!
Glad for the help and glad to have it done, deck refreshed and much MUCH more stable. We opted to leave the old railing off, which will be replaced in the near future with some nautical rope instead.
Thanks John!
