Iceland Day 9 - Snaefellsnes

We left the Laugar campsite early, and took a few gravel road "short cuts" to head across to into the Snaefellsnes Peninsula - the first one was quite rough and slow going, plus a construction zone with deep sand - the second one was decent though and passed through a scenic lava field, and we actually managed to do the speed limit! (80 km/h on gravel roads)

Regaining paved roads, we stopped for coffee at a restaurant (Hotel Rjukandi) gracing the junction of Roads 54 and 56, before heading north to explore the lovely little port town of Stykkisholmur. Our run of ridiculously nice weather started to wane, as the day was quite windy with a few periods of rain. We could have taken a ferry across from the Westfjords to this town, rather than drive around, including a stop at a small inhabited island along the way. Next time!

Jane took advantage of finding a Bonus grocery store to go in an buy some lava salt, at prices far cheaper than the tourist shops.....but then she came out with soft drinks, hot dogs and buns, but forgot the salt! I also tried to visit a Vinbudin for some beer, but they don't open until 2pm on weekdays!

We followed along the north shore of the peninsula, with the high winds buffeting the van around the road. We enjoyed nicer weather for a stop at the iconic Kirkjufell mountain, which appears in several shows and movies. We also managed to pull of a virtual video call with Dave (thanks, mobile hotspots!) and were able to show him around the camper van and some of the scenery.

After failing to find a food truck, we stopped for lunch at the Orkin gas station in Olafsvik. Jane had fish and chips, and I had a burger - tasty, but rather heavy on the sauces! I also hit the Vinbudin next door for a few new Icelandic beers.

We camped for the night a little further along in Hellissandur, which unbeknownst to us is also the self-proclaimed Street Art Capital of Iceland! We walked from the campsite and down into the town and waterfront to enjoy the many murals. Later in the day, camping amidst more lava fields and listening to music, we learned of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, after 70 years on the throne.
