Canada 150 Road Trip - Day 12

ALASKA - BRITISH COLUMBIA - YUKON TERRITORY

We left Skagway early, before the next round of cruise ships unleashed their crowds upon the town and their loaded buses upon the roads, after a quick stop at the Dyea Overlook for a panorama of the area. The White Pass & Yukon Route train escorted us up the mountain on the way out.

We crossed the border at Fraser, BC, where the CBSA officer took a look in the back of the Juke and remarked that it looked like we were moving. My back was no better bu the weather was much improved. so the return journey along the Klondike Highway afforded more superlative photo opportunities. The pictures below are worth many thousand words.

Arriving in Whitehorse, after seemingly 20 km of signs advertising Whitehorse, we visited the riverboat S.S. Klondike, beached beside the Yukon River. We grabbed lunch, some back meds, and made a brief stop at Yukon Brewing for the obligatory bottles and growlers. It turns out that the owners hail from Windsor and Hanover, Ontario - two areas very near to our heart!

We carried on westward as far as Haines Junction, before turning south for Kluane National Park. We had originally planned to camp there for the night at Kathleen Lake, but that was obviously no longer an option. We toured the park before returning to Whitehorse for the evening.

After grabbing a cheap hotel downtown, I awkwardly ambled the two blocks to wait in line to enjoy dinner at the well-known Klondike Rib & Salmon restaurant. The distance wasn't far, but there was a very busy street to cross......but apparently in Whitehorse everyone stops for pedestrians!

Shortly after we were seated, the grill cook had a seizure, but luckily some paramedics were dining there at the time. With grill options suddenly off the menu, the Yukon Red beer and caesar salad were good....but we vowed to return for the full dining experience.

Around midnight, we grabbed Jane a tea and headed up to Miles Canyon in search of the Northern Lights. They started a little while later.....then stopped. As with dinner, our first taste left us wanting more.We headed back to the Canada's Best Value Inn for a few hours of shut-eye.
