We packed up camp and departed Icelandic State Park, retracing our steps through Cavalier, ND and back to the Interstate. Shortly thereafter, we enjoyed a quiet border crossing at Pembina, ND - Emerson, MB....where the CBSA officer spent more time giving us camping tips than asking us questions!
We had to wait until Morris, MB for the first Tim Horton's, before carrying on up the Lord Selkirk Highway into Winnipeg. Heading straight downtown, we toured The Forks National Historic Site area, with a hint of smoke in the air from wildfires in northern Manitoba. This wonderful outdoor area sits where the Red River meets the Assiniboine River, featuring lots of parkland and public space.
From there, we ventured on to the outskirts of Winnipeg in a sudden thunderstorm, where we were staying with friends Cheryl and Dean and family in Stoney Mountain. Ironically, we headed back with them to The Forks for some authentic Ukranian lunch including our first taste of borscht, before picking up local dessert favourite flapper pie (aka wafer pie) on our way back out of the city.
We were treated to an awesome home-cooked meal for dinner, and were joined by friends Vickie and Chris for a rollicking evening of drinks and laughter, and a comfy bed for the night. Thanks to son Shawn for giving up his room!
