For once we slept in a little, mainly to wait for a bit of daylight before hitting the road. Before Jane even had a chance to sip her hot coffee, she was negotiating a writhing snake of asphalt up a sheer mountainside. At least traffic was pretty much non-existent.
As usual, the local fauna were out in full force to greet us, and we saw caribou, deer, moose, mountain sheep and a fox along the way to Fort Nelson. We stopped at the Fort Nelson A&W for breakfast and another coffee, and took advantage of a liquor store next door (open at 9am on a Sunday!) to grab some local craft beers for our upcoming hosts in Edmonton.
We stopped again in Fort St. John for gas and Burger King, and found out that we had just missed a moderate earthquake near Haines Junction and the Alaska-Yukon border. Once back at Dawson Creek and the end (i.e. start) of the Alaska Highway, we regained BC Highway 2 and followed this to the Alberta border.
We lost an hour as we passed into Alberta, switching back to Mountain Time, and motored on to Grand Prairie. We returned to the highly affordable Gateway Motor Inn, and got a slightly nicer room this time for a quiet evening, spent resting and recovering after another long day in the car.
