Summer Roundup

I'm a little behind on my summer fun reporting - it's been busy!

We got tickets to see one of our favourite comedians in July at the casino in Windsor - he's not for everyone, but Anthony Jeselnik is hilariously dark! Unfortunately, no pictures allowed within the venue - so all I can show is the theatre before the show....and the Detroit skyline afterwards!

Jane made time in between art shows to boil up a batch of dill pickles, after ordering pickling cukes from Raymont's, as we were running low and demand was high among friends and family. Twenty jars of Kosher Dills should tide everyone over for another year.

In mid-August, we ventured to London on a Friday night for an outdoor concert at a new and promising venue along Hyde Park, in behind a well-known local pub. The Trews acoustic trio was playing, along with unknown opener Dueling Pianos. There were rumoured to also be local breweries and food trucks lined up for what was supposed to be a three-day festival, though we were only attending the one night.

After checking into our motel by the 401, we met John and Julie and friends at the venue.  We even paid for "premium" seats, which meant actual chairs at a folding table, rather than standing around in the grass. All told, our group occupied most of the table of ten. I even tried a few of the local beers. The venue was small and intimate, with likely less than a thousand people in total hanging out in a field.

Dueling Pianos turned out to be two highly energetic and entertaining sisters from out West, who took requests from the crowd and played songs from a wide variety of genres with some humour. They were also just a few feet away from our table.

The Trews took the stage and brought their A-game as always - this was my 11th time seeing them live.

They covered a range of their more acoustic-friendly tunes from many albums old and new. A memorable highlight was a train passing through on nearby tracks during an attempted sing-along, something The Trews acknowledged does not happen at too many shows!

After they wrapped their set and a few encores, the Dueling Pianos came back out to wind down the evening with a few more requests. We headed back to the motel with Jane at the wheel, and after an altogether pleasant evening, we had an early lunch with Dave on Saturday morning before heading for home.

Greta Van Fleet!

After a humid and busy Saturday at Art on the Boulevard, we headed out on Sunday morning for a pleasant and scenic drive along the lake to Niagara Falls. Besides a nice excuse to visit one of the Wonders of the Natural World, we had a more important reason for the trip - tickets to see Greta Van Fleet at the Fallsview Casino. One of our favourite bands, we had yet to see them live.

We arrived just after lunch and explored the Falls and Clifton Hill area, on a rather hot and busy day. Hardly surprising given that it was a summer long weekend. After walking the Falls area, we wandered up Clifton Hill, where we paused for some shade and refreshments at Niagara Brewing. Live music on the breezy patio was a nice complement to the cool beer.

We kept it simple for dinner and walked over to Zappi's for delicious takeout pizza, which we ate back in our room at the Comfort Inn Fallsview.

We arrived somewhat early for the concert at the OLG Stage, but the merch line was already so long they were turning people away. We found our seats up at the very top (400-level, row J) and met our friendly neighbour for the night. To see a band like GVF in a such a small and acoustically-designed venue was extra special.

Opening band Crown Lands were local - hailing from Oshawa - and were extremely talented. They managed to rock a very Rush-like performance with just TWO members - one guy on guitar, bass and keyboards; and the other member on drums, vocals and wind instruments.

Greta Van Fleet was simply incredible. Josh brought his trademark vocals and a large number of wardrobe changes, while the rest of the band rocked out around him. Each got a few opportunities to showcase their individual talents, and the pyrotechnics show was also quite spectacular. We could quite literally feel the heat above, each time they went off.

After opening up with "The Falling Sky", they played a lot of songs off their current Stargazer album, plus of number of older favourites as well.  The groupies were plentiful and the crowd was wild! The hit "Highway Song" turned into an extended jam that also segued in and out of some classic blues covers. They did a bit of an acoustic interlude as well, including a memorable version of "Black Smoke Rising".

The band played for about two and a half hours before sending us off happy into the night. The only drawback was the merch line again - this time lined up out the doors and into the street. We opted to skip the wait for a night-time view of the Falls again before heading back to the room.

On the holiday Monday, we headed out and took a relatively quiet back way to diagonal across to Ancaster and the 403. We stopped in London on the way through and picked Dave up for a visit.

Awesome show - would see both bands again in a heartbeat!

R.I.P. Pita

We lost Pita last week, rather suddenly and without much closure - dear sweet Pita. She was the gentlest soul, and was always there to comfort the other cats in their time of need.

She was born on our property in May 2011, one of three Nugs that have known no other place but this. She used to sleep in a pile with her two brothers, a trait they kept up into adulthood, especially in the colder weather.

She may have had a bit of a daddy complex, owing to her absentee father - she always seemed to gravitate towards elder male figures - first Poots, then Jebus, and finally Pennywise. She was extremely sensitive and caring to Pennywise in particular in his final days.

She alone has accomplished what few cats can - keeping their actual name. While most other cats end up being called something completely different, she was Pita to the end - a Pain In The A$$ that earned her name each and every day, but in a very sweet way.

She was likely our hardest cat to photograph, so we don't have a ton of great shots - but at least we have a few. She also seemed to carry about 90% of her weight in her hind end, which made it challenging to pick her up.....and also made for some dramatic "jumps" from time to time!

She also liked to wake us up by dragging her considerable paunch across our faces.

She was very social, and liked to stand on people's feet - usually me, while I was trying to hang laundry or work in the garden - but she also did the same thing to total strangers who would come to do work on the property or customers to the studio. She actually drooled all over the insulation guy's boots!

We got home from a weekend away, and she seemed to be having a little trouble breathing - not really obvious, especially in the warm weather, but her sides were heaving a bit abnormally when she breathed. We dropped her off at the vet, and they thought at first she had a respiratory infection but wanted to do some more tests.....then we got a call telling us we should get there as fast as possible. Unfortunately, we didn't get there fast enough.

Apparently she had fluid (blood, as it turned out) on her lungs, from an unknown bleeding mass. She crashed so fast. We never got to say a proper goodbye, and we were devastated that we weren't there to comfort her in her final moments.

As the first of the Nug Family to pass, even before her mom, we laid her to rest on the west lawn under some beautiful trees. Mama and the brothers attended and said their goodbyes as well.

Farewell sweet Pita - aka Pete, Petey, Pit, Pita-Pit, Pitomsky, Petema, Pit-Pass, Pit-Chunk, Footstander, Chunkers and Chunky Butt.
