Faroe Islands - Day 10

Awaking to light drizzle and rain forecasted to continue throughout the Faroes, we opted for a chill day. After making coffee and breakfast in the campground kitchenette, which was actually part of a local cultural centre, we had nice hot showers before packing up to go. We also ran across the street to the A grocery store for some fresh bread and fruit.

Winding our way up and out of Fuglafjordur, we ventured west, the constant rain swelling the green hillsides along the way from rivulets to raging waterfalls. Knowing we had to swap vans tomorrow at the airport, the plan was to return to Giljanes campground and pack up and clean and prep the VW for early morning return.

Back through the mountain tunnel and across the bridge at Nordskali to Streymoy, we wound south and under the sea to Vagar and made our way to Midvagur. While Jane made lunch in the hostel common area, I took the van up to the Magn and topped up the tank with diesel for tomorrow's return. Diesel was running at $14.91 Kr per litre - or roughly $3.20/L Canadian.

We spent the afternoon packing up the van and hanging out in the common area. I noted the bulletin board with many notes tacked up written on coffee filters from people all over the world, including several nice sketches of Felix the Hostel Cat. The best thank you note, however, was from a Canadian traveller.....because it written on a $0.25 Canadian Tire bill!

We even met the owner Kristian, who explained that Icelandair flights often cancel because they send propeller planes from Iceland that can't always handle the local weather, while Atlantic Airways is based in Vagar and uses 737 jets instead and generally don't have to cancel. Given today's high winds, he assured us that Icelandair would have cancelled....but Tuesday (our intended departure day) was looking like better weather!

Jane made penne with spicy Dolmio sauce to go with our fresh bread, and I finished my book whiling away the day, leaving it behind in the hostel library for someone else to enjoy. Other than the bed, the van was all packed up and ready for tomorrow's swap.
