US RoadTrip 2012 - Day 1 and 2

Having trouble getting the tablet to rcognize the memory card from the camera.....so sadly this post will be text only in the interim.

DAY ONE - left in the wee hours and cleared US Customs at Detroit by dawn, after accidentally choosing the Nexus lane. Oooops. Lucky we got a nice person. Very icy in southern Michigan, saw many cars in the ditch on 94W and 69S. Much better once we hit Indiana.

Hammered on thru Indiana and Illinois as temperatures rose and road conditions improved. Cleared Indianapolis around lunch, veered west towards Missouri. Passed under The Arch in St. Louis and into Missouri around 4pm, and a little while later we were camping at Meramec State Park. Cool park, caves and a river, and very quiet amidst the old burr oaks. Camping cool but bearable when properly prepared.

DAY TWO - packed up camp and on the road by 7am Central Time. We followed 44W, part of the Old Route 66 through the rest of Missouri on a southwest diagonal, in the face of increasing winds. Crossing into Oklahoma on 44W, we hit Tulsa before turning due west on 40W for Oklahoma City. We decided to drive later and get a cheap hotel rather than camp earlier, so we pushed on into Texas into the westering sun.....ending up in Amarillo for the night. High winds continued throughout the day.

Two days, six states = 2223 km so far. The Juke is performing admirably. By tomorrow night we hope to clear Texas and New Mexico and be camping at the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
