Europe 2018 Day 10 - Venice Revisited

Our ship docked back in Venice, and we waited in the Gatsby's Lounge for wheelchair assistance. Having returned the rented wheelchair the night before, ship staff of questionable experience wheeled Jane down and off the ship and deposited her in the terminal, where we collected our luggage and cleared Italian customs.

From there, we walked from the port area into Piazzale Roma, where we stopped for some coffee and breakfast. Our Airbnb apartment for the night was not much further in a quiet part of the Dorsoduro, and Laura was gracious enough to let us drop our bags early in the morning, while lamenting the general tendencies of the previous guests. She was still cleaning up after them.

We walked a lot of Venice over the day, slowly, with a great lunch stop to wait out a sudden rain. We passed the famous Accademia gallery, where we found a local artist sketching in the square and made a memorable purchase - grazie, Marco!

When the rains returned, we purchased cheap plastic ponchos....mainly just to keep the artwork dry! We wandered down to St. Mark's Square, where the wind and rain intensified. After waiting out the rain huddled under a pillared walkway, we opted to catch the vaporetto during a lull. The water of the Grand Canal near the open lagoon was getting quite rough, making for a choppy ride until we got back to more sheltered canals.

After taking the water taxi all the way back to Piazzale Roma, we walked the short distance to our apartment, and John and I made a wine and snack run to a nearby Prix grocery store. Later, we dashed back to Piazzale Roma for some takeout, to enjoy dinner in the apartment on our last night together, along with a random and eclectic music mix from an Italian video channel.
